Various locations around Melbourne

Why is this experience on the Challenge List?

I remember when I had my very first Fitbit and I was coming back from a holiday from Anglesea one day, my watch was in a cup holder and it must have been shaking the watch the entire time and by the end of the day I had apparently walked 50,000 steps. Now I knew that I had definitely not done that many steps and it felt like cheating to still be rewarded as Fitbit put a streamer display on the app and sent me an email presenting me with a badge and saying that I’d reached a milestone of 50,000 steps in a day. I couldn’t believe I had this award and that I hadn’t even put the effort in so that is why I decided to add it to the Challenge List as I was determined to actually complete this challenge the right way by taking all 50,000 steps in 24 hours.

Description:

Attempt #1 - Saturday 14th November 2020:

Being the first attempt, I figured if I just walked a lot and for most of the day then surely I would just reach the 50,000 step goal. I couldn’t have been more wrong, I walked several kilometres and for quite a few hours and even took the long way instead of shortcuts. I walked to get lunch, I convinced my little sister to go for a walk with me and the dog and whenever I could pace and get a few bonus steps I would. The steps just didn’t seem to be adding up as much as I wanted them to and by the end of the day, I only reached 26,101 steps. Don’t get me wrong that is a pretty solid first attempt and I was impressed that I could make it over halfway but it meant that the next attempt would need to do a bit more planning.

This was the beautiful view from the nature reserve that I was walking around. This particular creek can have platypus sightings but I didn’t see any on the day. It’s a beautiful reserve to walk around with many trees and walking paths.

Attempt #2 - Saturday 20th March 2021:

The second attempt took a bit more strategic planning and I decided to follow the trail of the UooUoos that the Royal Children’s Hospital had put out to celebrate their 150th anniversary with these UooUoos being placed throughout Melbourne and the surrounding suburbs. My cousin decided to come along for the journey and find all 100 UooUoos with me in a day. So with the RCH app to find the Uoo Uoos and 50,000 steps as the goal, surely this challenge would be a walk in the park…

Firstly, at around 7:00 am my cousin and I went for a walk and met halfway and then walked around a few parks and this walk continued for 40 minutes. We got to wach the sunrise over the local park.

Then we went back to my house and started driving to Geelong as there were 10 UooUoos there and it would be easy to mark them off all at once. When we eventually arrived in Geelong it turns out the building that was housing the UooUoos was difficult to find and when we eventually did find it it was closed until later that day.

Thankfully, we could see the UooUoos through the window to get the codes to log that we had seen them on the app and take their photos. These are the ten UooUoos I found in Geelong.

After getting all the photos of the UooUoos we found that one of the tyres on my car needed pumping up with air and after that, we were on our way to Williamstown Botanical Gardens where we found the UooUoo called Cosmic Imagination, which is also where they had tents setup to showcase what Surf Life Saving Victoria does and the importance of them being around. We spoke to a few people at the tents briefly and drove to the pier in Williamstown. We walked past the Williamstown Navy ship museum and headed towards the pier where we found another UooUoo called Intergalactic.

After finishing in Williamstown we drove 30 minutes to Ascot Vale, where nearby the library we found Synbio the UooUoo. We drove a further 2.5km and found Bloom aplenty at the Moonee Valley Transfer Station.

We walked back to the car and drove the 3km to Essendon where we parked again and walked to find the Cheerful Monster UooUoo. By this point I was getting a little concerned because it was almost 13 hours through the day and we still hadn’t even reached 10,000 steps. We were doing more driving than we were walking, which meant that we were finding the UooUoos on the outskirts of the city but we the step count just wasn’t happening.

Whilst in Essendon, we walked to Mount Alexander Road junction which is where the UooUoo Geared up was hiding and we continued on the short walk we found on Rose Street UooUooSAURUS.

After realising that the step count was still staying low we decided to walk 4km around the Moonee Ponds area to find some more UooUoos. On Puckle Street we found the UooUoo and his Kaleidoscopis Coat of Wonder, we walked further to the Clock Tower and found Scribbles. Walking along to Queens Park we found My Atlas the UooUoo and further down the track at the Moonee Valley Racing Club we found Flowers & fun the UooUoo.

We started to walk to the Moonee Ponds train station but before we arrived we found a fabulous little hidden shop called Gourmet Kitchen where we got to try a delicious array of strawberry desserts. We discovered that they also do cooking classes in speciality areas, this will have to be something that we have to come back for one day!
We jumped on the train and went for two stops before getting off at Newmarket Station to find the next UooUoo, after a little walk we found Robert the UooUoo. Just as we were passing by a group of people were setting up to do an African drumming session and they had a zookeeper with a giraffe, it was quite the show to witness. The drums started playing altogether and it was quite an incredible sound when they are played altogether, we started to leave and you could still the drum beat along the street it was something to behold.

We got back on the train at Newmarket station and got off at Southern Cross Station. At the bottom of the staircase at Southern Cross Station we found Alick, then on the Bourke Street Bridge we found The Big Drive UooUoo. Then walking further to the entrance of Marvel Stadium we found The Bunyip.

We continued walking past Marvel Stadium towards the ‘Cow up a tree’ sculpture near the waterfront and this is where we found Gumball machine. Nearby on the Harbour Esplanade we discovered Newtopia and in Victoria Harbour we found Ladders UooUoo.

As soon as were in the Melbourne CBD it became easier to find the UooUoos and they seemed to almost be everywhere we were walking, we were gathering more UooUoos to the total collected quite quickly. The Baa-ni-ip (Bunyip) UooUoo was located at the Victoria Harbour Promenade, Untitled was hiding at the Docklands Park and at the Docklands Hub was Inside Out the UooUoo.

At Seafarers, we discovered FindYou where you could look at the UooUoo to find yourself. Umbrella Girl was located on Dukes Walk (MCEC) and The Odd Fish had one of the best locations relevant to its title being at Polly Woodside.

Whilst on the Orrs Walk we found Summer Dreamers and then within a short distance we found Marlipinyini at the Crown Promenade. It was at Central Equity that we found UooUoo’s Journey.

We began walking towards Queens Bridge Square and found Koala Paradise the UooUoo. Once over the bridge, we found Great Barrier Reef Dreaming – I absolutely LOVE the location and backdrop for this UooUoo – which was located at Les Erdi Plaza (Sandridge Bridge), we crossed back over the bridge to find a few more on that same strip of the walkway. We started walking a little further to try and find another UooUoo that we couldn’t find as it seemed to have walked away, which is when we stumbled upon You and Me which wasn’t even on the map, it was meant to be somewhere else. The UooUoos appeared to be conspiring against us so that we couldn’t find them all, by wandering away to another location.

We walked further along a little further confused as to what we might find next, if the UooUoos were moving about on us… We found the UooUoo I Want Candy at the Riverside Trio Southbank and Spring Wattle was very close at the Riverside Quay. Crossing over Princes Bridge to get to Flinders Street Station we located Metruoo where there were so many people gathered around it, making it difficult to get a photo with the clocks but I just managed to get one.

We walked over the road to Federation Square and found UooUoonicorn (my little sister said that this was her favourite UooUoo). At Artplay on Birrarung Marr we found Mango and along further at Alexandra Gardens was UooUoo visiting my garden.

To find The changing hue of UooUoo we just had to keep walking until we reached Melbourne Park and then turn back around to go to the Pillars of Wisdom to find Prism – this UooUoo looked like a giant disco ball! We climbed up the hill at the Royal Botanical Gardens and it was there that we found Vombatus Uoo.

Within the Kings Domain Gardens we found the incredible Wombat Dreaming and at the Grant St Park was the UooUoo One sees well only with the heart. At the front of the Victorian College of the Arts, we came upon Binga.

We tracked down the UooUoo Art can change your world at the Floral Clock in Queen Victoria Gardens. Further along on the Orrs Walk was the Blue UooUoo and on the same path we found The tale of the Gecko who couldn’t sleep which had the beautiful location of being right near the Arts Centre Melbourne.

By this time it was 7pm and the sun was setting, we still hadn’t reached 50,000 steps and we hadn’t collected all 100 UooUoos. The day wasn’t completely done but we were getting tired. What we had achieved was collecting 55 UooUoos, we decided to find a few more as we continued to watch the sunset.
This meant going to Bourke Street Mall and out the front of Myer we found Tulip (which I later bought a statue of this for my kinder friends, so they could have their own UooUoo). On the other side of the Mall near The Walk Arcade we found Rainbow  Dreaming | Binbiyal Malamiya the UooUoo. Then we decided we could get one more UooUoo on our way back to Flinders Street Station and that is when we found Daoism which was located inside the QT Hotel.

It was about 8pm before we reached the station and had to head back to where we had parked the car in Essendon and then from there I had to drive to my cousin’s house to drop her off and then go home. It would have been tempting to just stop there and rest as I was pretty exhausted from such a big day.
When I got back to my house I realised that I had only reached 37,000 steps and it was now 9pm. This was the pivotal moment for me that day, I realised I could stop now and try again another day or being only 13,000 steps away from the goal it was worth trying as I felt that getting this many steps again in a day would be hard.
I had a quick snack for dinner as I wasn’t overly hungry by that time and then had to work out if it was possible to even reach 50,000 steps with the remaining time of the day. I worked out that I was roughly walking 1,000 steps every 10 minutes, with this  in mind, it meant that I had to walk 1,000 steps every 10 minutes until midnight without slowing down. I had exactly 10 blocks of 10minutes left, it really was getting down to the final crunch for time. I put on a movie and started pacing around the lounge room whilst watching the movie.
I was walking in circles, lines going backwards and forwards or sometimes only walking forwards in the line, I was doing everything that I could think of to keep the pace up and not slow down. At 11:43pm I was ahead of schedule meaning that I had gone above my anticipated pace and I was on 49,006 steps I had less 994 steps to do in 17 minutes, it was such a great feeling that I think I slowed down a little to really enjoy  the last 1,000 steps.
At 11:53pm I finally had that elated feeling in the moment of “I DID IT! I ACTUALLY WALKED 50,000 STEPS IN A DAY!!” ‘I walked a little further to try and stretch out my legs and then I collapsed to the ground, I was done, absolutely and completely done, I was able to relax and just stop moving for a little bit, until I was ready to drag myself to bed.
Below is video footage of the moment after I collapsed on the floor and I was doing my victory video. I think I was a little wrecked by the end of all that walking... but I still wore a smile!

Would I do it again?

Look this was definitely an endurance challenge physically and mentally, to keep myself going through the day to get the required amount of steps and to not give up!

I believe now that this challenge has been completed I have no intention of completing it again, once was definitely enough. Unless I participate in a charity organisation such as Relay for Life, which is continuous walking for 24 hours.

Highlight:

“It’s not the Destination, it’s the journey.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I feel as though this quote really is quite accurate for this Challenge, I had the goal of 50,000 steps but the journey getting there was incredible. I went to so many new places, met new people, and saw things that I wouldn’t have seen if hadn’t chosen to complete this Challenge on that particular day. I saw the African Beats drummers and giraffe in Newmarket, I also came across a beautiful Newmarket Fridge Library where it had the take a book, leave a book philosophy.

I am very grateful that I got to share this experience with my cousin, for the company along the way and we went on the quest together to find the UooUoos and walk the 50,000 steps it was definitely a journey I will never forget!

I am extremely proud of myself for reaching the 50,000 steps in a day, it was equivalent to just over 35km. I was a little skeptical that I was going to finish the challenge when I had only just under 9,000 steps at 1pm or that when I was home at 10:20pm I had 40,000 steps. I am so grateful that I was able to reach my final goal by the end of the day! Below is how the day tracked with the steps.

Cost:

Most of the costs of the day were the Myki and the petrol. We had a little bit of a treat at Gourmet Kitchen with the strawberry dessert and we ate out for lunch. So the day would have cost approximately under $60.

Further information:

I would highly recommend training or at least building up your fitness level of endurance because I didn’t and my leg started to play up at 17,000 steps and was sore for the entire rest of the day walking. Also for the following three days I was really sore and struggled to walk but I eventually did recover, it just would have been better with a warm-up and practice.

This is the map where we went over the entire day, according to Google maps we drove 216km over 3h 51m and was on a train 15.8km which was 37m. We found 58 UooUoos out of the 100 to find and I walked 50,130 steps in a day!
