Where?

Around The Grampians & Halls Gap, Victoria, Australia

Why is this experience on the Challenge List?

I have done many walks in the past that have been over a distance, the purpose of this experience was to find a destination and walk for 5km to explore the sorroundings.

Description:

One of my friends and I had decided in February 2019 that we would go for an overnight camping trip at the Grampians, both of us had never been but had always wanted to go and explore the area.

When we were there we managed to tick quite a few things off The Challenge List, such as; have a board games night, go to a waterfall, take a photo every hour for day, leave a note in a library book and the 5km walk.

We started out by walking around Halls Gap which is in the region of The Grampians. We did a short 2km circuit walk where we found some amazing scenic areas to explore.

Then we got back into the car and drove to another area and found a less used walking path where we were able to an area to walk between a cliff face and the bank of a waterway. There were so many things to be looking at with native flora and fauna.

We finished the walk and the total was 5.25km and in that time we had walked 7,825 steps, it took over an hour because of the driving time around and just stopping to explore.

Would I do it again?

Undoubtedly, its the best way to discover what Australia or the world has to offer when you go slightly off the beaten track and just walk. Walking is also essential for keeping the mind and body healthy.

I loved with this particular walk it had a purpose for the scenery and with that I was surprised what we found around every corner, it just captured the Australian Outback perfectly!

WALKING AROUND THE GRAMPIANS

These are the photos that I captured whilst I was on the 5km walk. We saw a mob of Emus just freely walking around, stunning views, new growth within a burnt tree and I got a photo of myself taking pictures.

Highlight:

Getting to explore in general with the walk was exciting and fascinating, the best part of the walk was find the mob of Emus as I had never seen them in the wild before.

Also walking with my friend, walking in general just allows people to talk naturally and we had some of the best conversations whilst on the walk.

Cost:

It was completely free!!!

I used a Fitbit to track how far we had walked and it was just petrol to get to the Grampians but then again the walk could have been done anywhere, we just chose a new area that we hadn’t explored before.
