Date achieved:

Where?

Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park, Northern Territory, Australia

Why is this experience on the Challenge List?

Growing up in Melbourne one place that I had always had my eye on visiting was Uluru, when I saw that there was a giant outdoor exhibition of 50,000 solar powered lights. I knew that it was time to go. The exhibition called The Field of Light Show.

Description:

I booked everything in and went with my grandmother and auntie, a four-day adventure that included; flying in a helicopter over Kings Canyon, camel riding, riding a Segway around Uluru, seeing an indigenous war dance along with designing and creating a glass pendant.

The night we finally got see the Field of Lights we had a bus come and pick us up from the hotel to transfer us to the viewing platform. We arrived with the welcome of fresh refreshments and beverages, some of which were Australian cuisine others were interesting delicacies that I’d never even tried – crocodile quiche for instance.

Standing on the viewing platform had a very surreal feel about it, everyone was excited to witness the sunset over Uluru and watch the solar lights turn on. As the sun began to set casting a majestic view over Uluru we were able to see as each of the 50,000 lights turned on slowly. Everyone in the surrounding area you could see the awe on their faces and then as every phone was whipped out to take the remaining pictures before we went down to walk amongst the lights.

As you get closer to the lights it is clear why so many have flocked to see the exhibit. One of the interesting things about the Field of Lights is that every single light is connected to each other, this gave me the impression of the nervous system, everything is interlinked. The beauty of it all is that the lights aren’t all the same colour and instead they are in sections of colours, which emphasises how special it really is.

After you finish walking through the field you are transported back your hotel.
As you walk through the field, you can’t help but feel like a small child running through an open field with magic all around. With the giant Uluru looming in the background and the majestic lights, this truly is one of my favourite experiences.

Would I do it again?

I would definitely do it again, without a second thought. If you have the chance this is something I would highly recommend it to anyone, nothing can compare to this.

Highlight:

Seeing the look on my Grandmothers face as we walked through the field it really felt as if we had been transported to another place, it brought the magic of the place alive for me.

Cost:

We purchased the ‘Field of Light Star Pass’ which cost $95 for an adult

If your going to go it is definitely worth spending that little bit extra.

Further information:

The Field of Light show, which has been created by Bruce Munro and is his largest piece of work to date (larger than seven football fields). In local Pitjantjatjara it is named – Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakutjaku which means ‘looking at lots of beautiful lights’, which is basically what it is but so much more with the magic of the exhibit.
